As spiritual people we have all heard of the concept of personal responsibility, but how many of us apply it to our daily lives or even truly understand what it means. The concept of personal responsibility is vast and covers many aspects from the obvious, like taking responsibility for our own thoughts words and actions, to the more complex, like empowering others to do the same. It is this second more complicated aspect that is sometimes the hardest to define and the most difficult to achieve.
We do not have the right to interfere or control someone else’s pathway but, by the same token, no one else has the right to control or interfere in our spiritual pathway either. Unfortunately there are always those who wish to control us. Some who genuinely believe they are acting in our best interests and others who wish to control us because they believe it gives them power. We are all familiar with bullying in schools but it does not stop there. There are bullies in every aspect of our lives and it is our spiritual responsibility to do something about it.
If we allow others to bully us we are allowing others to control and interfere with our spiritual progression. As spiritual people we believe we are here to learn from the myriad experiences of the lives we have chosen. Dealing with bullies is part of that. Bullies are not always easy to recognise because they do not all behave in the same way. They do not always use aggression and physical violence to get what they want. They often manipulate others by the use of misinformation, lying and/or by playing the victim. We have all met people who try to make us feel sorry for them, who are always the victim and whose mistakes are always the fault of someone else.
Bullies are always insecure people whose only security comes from having power over others. But they only have this power because WE give it to them. Other people only have the power to control you if you let them. This is where your personal spiritual responsibility comes in. If you allow others to frighten you and control you, you are giving them power that they don’t really have, you are giving them control over your spiritual pathway and you are allowing them to interfere with your spiritual progression. Spiritually we are never alone and if you ask for help from Spirit, it will be there, but you must also choose to do something yourself. Just as you are not alone spiritually, you will find that if you begin to stand up to those who are bullying you, you will find help in the most unexpected quarters. Strangely enough, it is often those we think of as our friends who do nothing to help us, whilst those we may never particularly have considered to be friends who come to our aid.
Of course, we can walk away and leave it to someone else to do. But, if we do that, we allow the bully to carry on controlling others and as we have not learnt anything, the same situation will continue to arise until we find the courage to deal with it. We have also failed to help the person who is doing the bullying on their spiritual pathway because they are unable to see that they have done anything wrong because they are always allowed to get away with it. This reinforces their belief that they have the right to control others because no one bothers to stop them and, on the contrary, seem quite happy to let them get on with it.
Our spirits have included these experiences in our physical lives to help us progress on our spiritual journey. It would be a shame to let these opportunities pass us by and even worse to have to keep repeating them until we did take the opportunity that has been given to us.
