Make me a channel of your peace

MAKE ME A CHANNEL OF YOUR PEACE.

Channelling is about someone acting as an intermediary between the world of the living and the world of spirit.

The form of channelling with which we are all most familiar is when a medium is the intermediary. The medium listens to messages from a spirit in the next world and then relays such messages to relatives in the audience.

One very famous example of clairaudience channelling resulted in the book “Life in the World Unseen” which is a detailed description of the afterlife. The author, Monsignor Hugh Benson was a spiritualist sceptic and did much harm to Spiritualism while on earth and after he passed to the next world he was desperate to return and tell the truth of what he had discovered and redress the wrong he had done. He contacted an old friend Anthony Borgia and clairaudiently dictated to him the book which gives an account of what follows after physical death. (this book can be downloaded from the internet.)

There are other forms of channelling. A spiritualist healer becomes the channeller for the healing gifts of doctors, nurses and other medics from the next world in order to give healing to those still on the earth plane. Harry Edwards was a very famous spiritual healer and as his fame spread he received over 10,000 letters a week asking for his help. His gift for healing was never accepted by the church although he produced documentary evidence. He claimed that several deceased scientists including Lord Lister and Louis Pasteur worked through him and this is an example of channelling. Today all Spiritualist churches have their own healers who channel healing from the next world.

Automatic writing is when a spirit from the next world takes control of the medium’s hand and this is how spirit books are written. Then there is inspirational writing where words and sentences come into your mind as you write and you know that someone is helping you.

Some mediums have the gift of trance when their whole body is taken over by an evolved spirit and, through their lips, we hear wonderful lectures about the meaning of life and also what life is like in the next world. The best example of this type of channelling was when the Spirit Guide Silver Birch entranced the body of Maurice Barbanel and spoke about and answered questions on life and the next world. Fortunately these wonderful sessions were recorded and the information made available in book form so that we all could learn from them.

All the above are examples of channelling. I have always thought that channelling was a wonderful gift for someone to possess. Recently I was watching the BBC Songs of Praise programme and one of the hymns was “Make me a channel of Your Peace.” Listening to the words I suddenly realised that everyone of us can become a channel through which the love of God can flow into the world. Mother Teresa said that “God in His love has chosen us to be channels of His love and peace.”

The words of the hymn are based on a very famous prayer attributed to St Francis of Assisi but this has never been proved and the author is unknown. In 1967 Sebastion Temple wrote the hymn we all know today slightly altering the words. It has become very well-known and is sung at weddings, funerals and many other occasions. The words speak of the troubles we all face in our journey through life — hatred, sadness, despair, discord. The words of this prayer/hymn tell us that we must forget self and do what we can to help others so afflicted.

Oh Master grant that I may never seek
So much to be consoled as to console
To be understood as to understand
To be loved as to love with all my soul.

There are so many terrible things happening in today’s world that forgiveness is difficult and people doubt the existence of a God of Love and who can blame them?

Make me a channel of your peace,
Where there is hatred let me bring your love.
Where there is injury, your pardon Lord.
And where there’s doubt true faith in you.

As we go through life we all encounter situations where we want to speak words of consolation and comfort and perhaps give encouragement and hope. At such times we desperately search for the right words. Perhaps we send an “arrow” prayer to God “Tell me what to say. Give me the words I need.” This is where we can become channels from the next world to this.

It is not only the spoken word we may need but also the written word when we are writing a letter of condolence or sending a bereavement card. On such occasions I frequently enclose a suitable poem or perhaps a quotation I feel is appropriate and I have later been thanked and told of the comfort the words have brought. We are not all clever with words and we grope for inspiration so let us open ourselves to God and allow Him to use us as channels for His inspirers from the next world.
The last line is accepted by all Spiritualists.

“And in dying that we are born to eternal life.”
